Blackpool and The Fylde College received an Award for installing Lancashire’s first Reverse Vending Recycling Machine."
|
|
On Thursday 17th September 2009, Blackpool and The Fylde College received an Award for installing Lancashire’s first Reverse Vending Recycling Machine.
Blackpool and The Fylde College has installed Lancashire’s first Reverse Vending Recycling Machine at its new University Centre in a bid to encourage students and staff to recycle more of their used bottles and cans.
The innovative machine will automatically collect, compact and store used beverage containers and then issue a ‘Deposit Reward’ voucher with a face value of 5 pence for each unit recycled. The vouchers can be redeemed in the new Grads Café Canteen in the Central Hub.
The machine also has the capacity to compile statistics of the different types of used beverage containers collected which can then be recorded on the College website to show the success of reverse vend recycling.
This is the latest ‘Green’ initiative to come out of the College’s new University Centre – the new Central Hub building earlier this year became the first building in Blackpool to be awarded pre-construction BREEAM Excellence, praising it’s sustainable design and environmental performance.
Since completion, the Building Research Establishment has officially awarded the build with a post-construction ‘Excellent’ accreditation at a score of 74.18%, well over the 70% required and one of only a small number to achieve such a high rating post-construction nationally.
Commenting, Ruth Paisley, Vice Principal of Resources and Planning said: “We’re really pleased to be leading the way environmentally with innovative new ideas and a commitment to reducing our impact on the environment.
“We were one of few projects committed to achieving a post-construction BREEAM ‘Excellent’ merit, meaning we have stuck to our plans and not compromised on environmental impact in order to cut costs.
“I’m sure the ReVend machine will also give students and staff even more of an incentive to recycle their waste.”

Reverse Vending Corporation extends range
|

Reverse Vending Corporation has announced the launch of a range of new recycling machines |
|
In response to the increasing pressure on business and industry from the government to deal with its own waste and recent increases in landfill tax, the Reverse Vending Corporation has announced the launch of a range of new recycling machines.
Reverse vending recycling machines, RVMs, are fully automated recycling machines designed to identify, sort and collect used beverage containers for recycling. The Reverse Vending Corporation already has over 19,000 reverse vending machines on site throughout Continental Europe and the UK. It has now added three new models to its range. The reVend 100 is for coffee and water cups, the reVend 400 is for food waste and the reVend 470 is for glass bottles. All machines help to reduce waste management costs and increase staff productivity and can be purchased outright or supplied via a lease agreement. More >>
All models compact the waste, thus reducing its volume. Operation is automatic and controlled by sophisticated software. The machines are suitable for siting in a variety of catering and leisure locations, alongside machines vending drinks, in the workplace, the health and education sectors. More >>
Steve Stothard, senior vice president, technology of Reverse Vending Corporation explained, "Our current reVend machines already process for recycling PET bottles, cans and drinks cartons. These new machines bring an exciting added dimension to the world of recycling and will assist business, retail shopping centres, the public sector and the education sector with their recycling and packaging waste obligations." Top 5 Coolest Vending Machines of 2009 |

While we typically think of vending machines as dispensers, there are reverse vending machines that take your stuff instead of giving it to you, in exchange for cash of course. Reverse Vending Machines are a great component of the green trend, because they encourage people to recycle their plastic, aluminum and glass drink containers once they're finished with them. With Reverse Vending Machines, you can purchase a drink from one vending machine, and get some cash back at the next for your empty drink container.
Reverse Vending Corporation, based out of the UK, is one of the leading providers of Reverse Vending Machines. Their machines identify and sort the type of container deposited, and provide the user a refund for their container based on identification. Better yet, the Reverse Vending Machines also sort and compact the recyclable materials deposited. More >>
